Lifestyle Training
- Teaching Your Dog More Than Just Obedience

Our Canine School is designed for any dog over 7 months old. During this class you will learn to focus your dog’s attention on you, what motivators your dog will work for and how to make you the centre of your dogs’ world.

Each class will work on teaching your dog new commands from basic training like sit, drop and come to manners and focus like leave, give, touch and greetings. At the end of each class we will finish off with a group game to either work on the training we have been doing or to challenge your teamwork.

Classes run on Saturday’s from 7.30am - 8.30am during the hot weather. These classes run year round in our 3 acre secure training area.

The aim of this training is to help you and your canine companion work together as a team in a fun and positive way. If you feel your dog is not ready for this level of distraction yet please feel free to contact our Training Manager on 93062767 or training@west-coast.com.au to discuss your particular situation and concerns.

Rules for Lifestyle Training

For the safety and comfort of all participants, please:
Keep your dog on lead at all times.
Ask before approaching other dogs.
Keep a wide berth between yourself and any people wearing a yellow vest.
Have fun, enjoy your training and so will your dog!

Reason for yellow vests: these dogs, or owners, are not ready to be in close proximity with other dogs/people. This may be due to a bad experience, recuperating from surgery, or still working on calming down in the presence of so many new friends.

DoggieWould Training Methods

For our training we use marker and release words to help the dogs understand when they are doing the correct behaviour and when we want them to work with us, as compared to when we have them in “release mode” or non working/relaxed mode. Our marker word is “YES”, though you can use a word of your choice, we recommend using a word that isn’t commonly used in your daily conversations like okay or good. Our release word is “FREE”, though again you can use a different word if you prefer, I know of people that use party and yippy for their dogs, the choice is yours, though remember you will be saying it in front of other people!

To teach your dog that YES is a good word and means they are doing the correct behaviour and will soon be rewarded we start by playing the Yes Game, to do this start with a bowl of soft, easily swallowed food like sausage or dog meat roll cut up fine, say “YES” in a happy, up beat tone and give your dog a piece of food. Repeat this until you can say yes and your dog will immediately look for his/her treat.

Once your dog understands the marker word you have chosen you can start to use this in your training, we will show you in your first lesson how to use your marker and release words to train your dog.
